Celebrating Fiji Day on the Gold Coast

Fiji Day, which marks the day of independence from British colonial rule on October 10, 1970, is a significant event for Fijians, not only back in Fiji, but for all of us scattered around the world.

For the Fijian diaspora who call the Gold Coast in Australia home, our first Fiji Day event was a special time of celebration, bonding and a dynamic display of Fijian traditions, music and dance.

Friends, old and new, gathered to commemorate Fiji’s independence and rich cultural heritage. The Mantra Hotel in Surfers Paradise came alive with our colourful island wear, tropical adornments and beautiful warm smiles that are the signature of the South Pacific islands.

As we settled into our seats, the celebrations kicked off with a ceremonial welcome, speeches reflecting on Fiji’s journey to independence, and the unified singing of the Fijian anthem.

We were treated to a delicious 3-course meal with every now and then, a fellow Fijian would break out in that loud islander laughter deep from their belly and a random person would be chosen to do a dance off at their table that had us all in joyful spirits.

The evening transitioned into a festive atmosphere with popular Fijian melodies serenading the crowd. The dancefloor was never empty as we swayed our way through those South Pacific tunes and always, the taralala – a traditional Fijian side-by-side dance with one or more partners.

The highlight of the night was fostering camaraderie and connection with fellow Fijians locally on the Gold Coast. Being connected to my roots through these types of event has made for a more enriching life with fellow islanders.

As we wrapped up the evening, I can comfortably say that Bula Dinner 2024 was more than a celebration; it was a heartfelt tribute to Fijian culture, bringing together the community to honour our heritage and share our joy with the broader public.

It was an unforgettable experience that embodied the essence of Fiji in the heart of the Gold Coast.
